What is a Detailed Scan (Anatomy Scan)?

The Detailed Scan, also known as the Anatomy Scan, is an in-depth ultrasound typically performed between 18 and 23 weeks of pregnancy. This scan is a crucial part of your pregnancy care, offering a thorough assessment of your baby’s development to ensure everything is progressing well.

Why is it important?

During the Detailed Scan, the Sonographer will carefully examine:

• Baby’s Organ Systems: Each part of your baby’s body, from head to toe, is checked for normal growth, position, and size. This helps ensure that all organ systems are developing as expected for your stage of pregnancy.

• Fetal Growth: The scan monitors how well your baby is growing and if their development is on track.

• Amniotic Fluid Levels: The amount of amniotic fluid (the protective liquid surrounding your baby) is measured to ensure it’s within a healthy range.

• Placental Position: The location and health of the placenta are checked to confirm that it is properly implanted and functioning.

• Risk of Preterm Labor: For certain high-risk pregnancies, the scan may also assess the risk of preterm labor based on indicators such as a history of preterm delivery or being a first-time mom.​
